Back in May/June the bestie and I embarked on an epic road trip to Europe. We left Birmingham around 11pm, picked up our Bla Bla Car passenger and drove down to Dover, caught the ferry to Calais then adjusted to driving on the wrong side of the road and drove to Belguim. Less than 24 hours into our roadtrip and we’d driven through 3 countries! That’s why Kiwis and Aussies come live in England, I try drive to Australia and I’d drown, I can’t even drive between the North and the South Island without getting a ferry haha.
Breakfast in Bruges
It was tough going after no sleep but we cranked the music and got happy. Our first stop was Bruges. We arrived at sparrows fart, the streets were mostly empty, which was great for taking some photos with no-one in them! We wandered around and found a nice spot for breakfast. After breaky we wandered around some more, took photos and headed to our next destination – Ghent!
Brussels – Grand Palace
Ghent felt like a larger version of Bruges but also with a younger feel, we saw a number of stag and hens do’s even though it was daytime (a Saturday though!). We wandered, took photos, shopped, laughed, ate and had a few drinks. Both Bruges and Ghent have cute alleys and plenty of canals which make them very picturesque and fun to just wander randomly around.
Brussels – Pissing Boy statue – its tiny!
After Ghent we drove to my friends house just outside Brussels where we’d be staying for a few nights. I met Astrid back in New Zealand a good decade ago and we’ve managed to keep in touch off and on and connect when we are in the same city. I quite enjoy having friends worldwide! Over the next few days we explored Brussels and even took a detour to the Netherlands for lunch one day – just because we could! We also popped over to Antwerp to check it out and one day just picked a random place and drove there to explore. After all this we felt we’d seen a good deal of Belguim from large cities to small towns.
Mucking around in Leige, Belguim
Maastricht, Netherlands – a lunch stopover!
Stay tuned for Part two of our epic road trip!
